Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS)

Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) is a private, non-profit organization designated by the Governor to protect and promote the human and legal rights of people with disabilities in Michigan through the provision of information and advocacy. In providing services, MPAS strives to advance the dignity, equality, self-determination and expressed choices of individuals.

The HIV/AIDS Advocacy Program (HAAP) provides legal advocacy services to people living with HIV and AIDS in Michigan. Services include information and referral, direct advocacy, legal representation, training and attorney referral as well as publications and written materials to assist people with wills and estate planning, housing rights, social security benefits and other legal rights issues.

Alternatives for Girls

Alternatives For Girls (AFG) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization located in southwest Detroit, Michigan, serving homeless and high-risk girls and young women. Since 1987, AFG has provided critical services to program participants, including safe shelter, educational support, vocational guidance, mentoring and counseling. The goal is to empower girls and young women to make positive choices. AFG helps them repair their lives, rescue their dreams and restore their faith in the future.
 

CARES Community AIDS Resource and Education Services of Southwest Michigan

HAS, Inc. HIV/AIDS Services, Inc.

HIV/AIDS Services, Inc. (HAS, Inc.) was formed in April of 1998 as a collaborative effort of local concerned citizens.  The goal was to address the unmet needs of persons affected by HIV/AIDS in West Michigan without duplicating the services offered by existing agencies. They offer a needle exchange/harm reduction program in downtown Grand Rapids.

The Ruth Ellis Center

GLTBQ Youth now have a safe refuge. The Ruth Ellis Center opened in winter 2000 as an interim drop-in center to help meet the most basic needs of runaway and homeless gay, lesbian, transgender, bi-sexual and questioning (GLTBQ) youth in metropolitan Detroit. By fall, the Center will open its permanent facility and begin offering a residential safe space with a comprehensive program of support services to meet the physical, emotional and developmental needs of these youth.

 

Sisters and Daughters of Sheba  

Sisters and Daughters of Sheba™ is an educational program promoting good health and sounds minds while empowering, enlightening and enriching the lives of women of color of all ages - currently available in the metro Detroit area. Sisters and Daughters of Sheba™ is designed for those who desire a new and healthier approach to male-female relationships. Whether you are a teen or a senior, single or married, romantic and sexual relationships with significant others may be difficult, frustrating and stressful. The guiding theme in program activities is person-to-person and group-to-group communication around a central African love theme: the story of Solomon and Sheba.

Social Security touches the lives of people with disabilities every day. That’s why we joined 21 other federal agencies to create www.disabilityinfo.gov . Disabilityinfo.gov is a comprehensive website designed to offer people with disabilities access to important information they can use. Disabilityinfo.gov is a one-stop website — not only for people with disabilities, but also for older Americans, employers, Social Security beneficiaries, community- and faith-based service providers and others. Disabilityinfo.gov features information on a number of related topics. The site is easy to navigate, and is organized into subject areas, including benefits, civil rights, community life, education, employment, health, housing, technology and transportation.

National Institutes of Health Launches Redesigned Web Site
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released a redesigned Web site with new and innovative features (www.nih.gov). Visitors to the site now have direct and easy access to the NIH staff directory, training opportunities, funding information, and much more directly from the homepage. There is also an updated AIDS health information page that provides links to HIV/AIDS resources from many different divisions of NIH.

New Website on HIPAA Privacy Rule
HRSA/HAB NEWS Volume 10, Issue 15 (7/19/07)
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a new website designed to help consumers and health care organizations get information about what HHS is doing to enforce the Privacy Rule and pursue violators. The new site is part of the HHS Office for Civil Rights’ (OCR) continuing effort to help organizations get and stay compliant. It targets patients, health care providers, health plans, and others in the health care industry. Information on the website includes:

* HHS efforts to enforce the Privacy Rule and the results of these efforts;
* Statistics on the kinds of complaints OCR receives most frequently and the types of entities that are most often the target of consumer complaints;
* Details about consumer’s rights in accessing or protecting their private health information;
* Helpful hints for filing a complaint; and
* Extensive information designed to help covered entities become and stay compliant.

"Hard-Hitting Web Site Launched"

Gay Men's Health Crisis and AIDS Project Los Angeles recently launched a Web site to promote sexual awareness among gay and bisexual men of color ages 18-29. www.Mysexycity.com  uses simulations, in which visitors make decisions on behalf of a cast of characters, to convey facts about HIV transmission, STDs, substance use, coming out and relationships. "Mysexycity acknowledges the pivotal role of the Internet in the lives of younger gay and bisexual men," said Craig E. Thompson, APLA's executive director. "We are always looking for new and exciting ways to make HIV prevention relevant for the members of our communities at highest risk for infection," said Dr. Marjorie J. Hill, interim executive director of the Institute for Gay Men's Health, a collaborative effort of GMHC and APLA.
 

Veterans Affairs, UCSF Web Site on HIV/AIDS

Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of California-San Francisco: The Web site -- created by the VA Public Health Strategic Health Care Group and the UCSF Center for HIV Information -- is designed to provide information on HIV/AIDS to veterans and health care providers, peer counseling on HIV treatment and tools for caring for HIV-positive patients. Health care providers also can use the site to find VA-specific information on HIV/AIDS management and therapy, including guidelines and directives (hiv.va.gov, 11/18).

"New Web Site for HIV-Positive Women"
Women's Health Weekly (10.02.03)
     The Well Project, an initiative by and for women living with
HIV/AIDS, has launched a new Web site to serve as a comprehensive
woman-specific HIV resource offering the latest information on
managing the disease for infected women, health care providers,
and advocates. Women are the fastest growing population of newly
HIV-infected people in the United States and worldwide.
      "Women with HIV/AIDS face unique challenges. The Well
Project is specifically designed to identify and fill in the gaps
of current information and unify the distribution of the already
available, but often under-utilized resources," said Dawn
Averitt, its founder and CEO.
     The Web site includes fact sheets; data sets; summary
slides; a searchable clinical trials database; a resource
directory; and a physician network for expert discussion on
treatment. The site is divided into five targeted sections: HIV,
The Basics, Treatment and Trials, Diseases and Conditions, Living
Well, and a Women's Center.
     In addition, members can participate in confidential and
secure discussion boards, download advocacy tools, and receive an
e-newsletter highlighting the most current information about
women and HIV.
