The Hepatitis C Support Project and the Train the Trainer Program

The Hepatitis C Support Project (HCSP) is a registered non-profit organization founded in 1997 by HCV positive individuals to address the lack of education, support, and services available at that time for the HCV population. HCSP’s mission is to provide unbiased information, support, and advocacy to all communities affected by HCV, including medical providers.

Train the Trainer Workshops

Based on a needs assessment by our agency in 2001, they decided that a major resource need was quality HCV education that could be widely distributed and utilized throughout areas impacted by HCV. To accomplish this objective, they designed the Train the Trainer program that would train individuals to themselves become HCV educators in their respective communities.

The Train the Trainer workshop is an intensive two-day workshop that will provide the necessary skills and knowledge for people to go out into their communities and educate others about hepatitis C. Workshop participants that successfully complete the training will learn the necessary information to provide a basic HCV presentation. In addition, the training workshop will provide background information on HCV so that trainees will be able address audience questions. Workshop participants that successfully complete the course will be certified as Basic Hepatitis C Educators by the HCSP for a period of one year. The goal for this program is to provide HCSP-accredited trainers throughout the United States.

Annual recertification will be available to individuals who have completed the 2 day HCSP workshop. The goal of the recertification workshop is to provide a thorough review and update of pertinent information about hepatitis C to the workshop participants.

Public Health Virtual Training Center Debuts on Web

For more information Visit: http://www.asksphere.org Or contact Janet Place at (919) 966-7921 or at janet_place@unc.edu

The Southeast Public Health Training Center, part of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health, based at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has created http://www.asksphere.com , a new centralized clearinghouse, now on the Internet, for training opportunities for public health practitioners.

What is Asksphere? A searchable database of training resources and materials, Asksphere includes a directory of face-to-face courses, video conferences, satellite downlinks and web courses, aimed at health care professionals and those who train them. Resources for trainers will also include multimedia and publicly accessible curricula and manuals that can be modified for use by others. Training units can submit courses and resources that they would like to market through this vehicle.

“This project began with us putting together an inventory of best practices in public health training, particularly in the states we primarily serve, the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee," said Training Center Director, Janet Place.

"We weren't out to reinvent the wheel," Place added, "but to showcase what's already out there. The goal was to share the information with all those interested in various topics or skills to improve public health practice."

Core Competencies A successful approach to public health workforce development in this case matches what those in the field of public health call core competencies: analytic/assessment skills, basic public health science skills, cultural competency skills, communication skills, understanding community dimensions, financial planning and management skills, leadership and systems-thinking skills, policy development/program planning skills, and technology and informatics. Asksphere posts programs and resources that apply to these core competencies.

Asksphere Partners The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded virtual training center will continue to expand, as new courses are developed, new materials published, and new conferences scheduled. The UNC School of Public Health training center partners include West Virginia University, the University of Tennessee, the Kentucky School of Public Health, the University of South Carolina School of Public Health, the Eastern Virginia Medical School, and the state health departments of the six southeastern states.

Contact If you would like more information about Asksphere, please contact Janet Place at (919) 966-7921, or email her at janet_place@unc.edu.
