Optimizing Prevention Efforts in MI

The DHWDC HIV/AIDS Prevention and Intervention Section (HAPIS) has been taking a very hard look recently at how to utilize the limited resources for HIV prevention in our state. They shared the results of collaborative research addressing this issue during a webinar held on November 24 with Dr. David Holtgrave of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University.

"With funding for HIV/AIDS prevention becoming increasingly constrained, HAPIS/DHWDC recognized the need to look very closely at its prevention portfolio to identify the best mix of approaches needed to optimize our prevention efforts," said HAPIS' Liisa Randall in a letter to Michigan prevention service providers. "To assist us in this endeavor, HAPIS/DHWDC collaborated with [Dr. Holtgrave]. Through this collaboration, we sought to answer the following policy question, 'At the current level of resources available for HIV prevention activities in Michigan, what array of services would result in the most HIV infections averted, result in the lowest transmission rate possible, and maximize the level of awareness of HIV seropositivity.'"
