Michigan Go Local

Wayne State University's Shiffman Medical Library staff has put together a tremendous new resource for locating HIV/AIDS related services in Michigan on the Internet. Linked through the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the Michigan Go Local resource is part of a large National Institutes of Health project and is connected to Medline Plus.

Michigan Go Local is an extensive resource, which includes information on service providers not only for HIV/AIDS but also related health issues including STDs, mental health, hepatitis, substance abuse, etc. The site is easy to navigate and search for providers in specific geographic areas in Michigan.

Linda Draper, who has coordinated the Detroit Community AIDS Library at Shiffman Library since 1995, is heading up the data processing for this new Michigan Go Local project. For many years Draper has worked on the User Friendly Guide, which has provided resources for the Detroit metro area. For the new statewide database, Draper started with data from this Detroit Guide. Michigan Go Local currently has about 6,900 entries and Draper is still expanding its resources.

Michigan Go Local was launched in January, however it was not unveiled until a presentation at the Michigan HIV/AIDS Council (MHAC) meeting on March 23. MHAC Chair and MDCH-HAPIS Manager Debra Szwejda was instrumental in ensuring that Michigan Go Local provide access to a wide spectrum of related health topics.

This new Michigan resource has been a huge undertaking, made possible through a grant from the NLM. The data entry is ongoing and Draper is seeking individuals to help with the data review and entry process as well as to help develop promotions for this project. For more information, please contact Linda Draper at (313)577-8943, or Email: LDraper@med.wayne.edu.

AIDSWatch in Michigan

As there are NO scholarships available for travel to the AIDSWatch event at the nation's capitol this year, the Michigan Positive Action Coalition will try to assist those who are not able to attend the DC event in making appointments and visits to the local district offices here at home. "It is just as effective as going to DC and just as important," said Rick Otterbein, Legislative Director, Michigan Positive Action Coalition, www.mi-poz.org.

HIV National Testing Day (NTD) Kick-off

This year the MDCH HIV/AIDS Prevention and Intervention Section (HAPIS) will conduct its 6th annual National Test Day Kick-Off Rally one month early on Wednesday, April 11th from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in Okemos. The reason for this change is two-fold: to give agencies the opportunity to plan extraordinary events and to roll out a new mini grant process being offered this year to enhance NTD events that propose unique and innovative strategies. The rally and NTD efforts are being given a large shot of enthusiasm by the new coordinator of this event, HAPIS Prevention Consultant Lisa Taton-Murphy.

If you represent an agency and haven’t already done so, please sign up to attend this event; lunch will be provided and drawings for door prizes will take place at the end of the day. You must register for this Kick-off Rally event by Friday, April 6.

For those individuals who cannot attend the rally, plans of action and information about NTD and the new mini grant opportunity are available from Lisa Taton-Murphy, telephone 517.241.5932 or email TatonL@michigan.gov. DHWDC-HAPIS Update, March 2007
