Make a
difference – sign up as a scientific writing e-mentor
Are you interested in sharing your research
writing and publishing experience with young and/or less-experienced researchers
in low- and middle-income countries?
If so, join the International AIDS Society’s (IAS)
mentors network and be part of a global initiative to improve scientific
literacy through e-mentoring.
The IAS’s Abstract Mentor Programme for the
XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) is now recruiting experienced
HIV/AIDS and public health researchers to support young and/or less experienced
abstract submitters as they prepare their abstracts for submission. As a mentor,
you review draft abstracts and provide feedback on scientific writing and
writing style, research methods and analysis, and which abstract categories to
target.
E-mentoring is proven to increase the success
rate of researchers from low- and middle-income countries. It is completely
independent of the conference’s abstract review and selection process.
AIDS 2010 will be held 18 to 23 July 2010 in
Vienna, Austria. Abstract submissions are open from 1 November 2009 to 10
February 2010.
The IAS is recruiting new mentors through 31
October 2009. If you are interested in joining the programme, contact the IAS at
mentor@aids2010.org.

AIDSinfo's Publication Ordering Policy Goes
"Green"
Starting in January, AIDSinfo will no longer provide hard copies of
the HIV/AIDS Treatment Guidelines via ordering from the Web site. In the future,
hard copies will only be available by contacting AIDSinfo directly via
telephone (1-800-448-0440) or e-mail (Contactus@aidsinfo.nih.gov).
This step is being taken as part of an effort to reduce AIDSinfo's
carbon footprint; the printing and shipping of thousands of copies of guidelines
per year produce a significant amount of greenhouse gases. Additionally, the
guidelines are updated frequently and constant reproduction of hard copies is
not conducive to maintaining "living documents" such as the treatment
guidelines.
Guidelines will continue to be available for download from the Web site or by
e-mail from the Pubs Ordering section at no cost to users. (Or the environment!)

New
National Perinatal HIV Consultation and Referral Service
HRSA/HAB has developed a new 24-hour clinical consultation service, the National
Perinatal HIV Consultation and Referral Service (PerinatalHotline). This service
provides 24-hour advice from HIV experts on indications and interpretations of
HIV testing in pregnancy as well as consultation on treating HIV-infected
pregnant women and their infants.
The Perinatal Hotline not only answers callers' immediate questions and helps
solve urgent perinatal HIV issues, but also assists clinicians in linking
HIV-infected pregnant women and HIV-exposed infants to the mostappropriate care.
Callers are referred to a national network of education, training and
consultation services available from regional AIDS Education and Training
Centers (AETCs). The Perinatal Hotline is an expansion of the HRSA National
HIV/AIDS Clinicians' Consultation Center (NCCC) at San Francisco General
Hospital, which currently operates the National HIV Telephone Consultation
Service (Warmline) and the National Clinicians' Post-Exposure Prophylaxis
Hotline (PEPline).
The NCCC is part of the AETC Program funded by HRSA/HAB in partnership with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and HAB's Division of Community
Based Programs. The Perinatal Hotline (888-448-8765) and the PEPline
(888-448-4911) are both available 24 hours, seven days per week.
The Warmline (800-933-3413) is available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (EST) Monday through
Friday.
