HIV Intervention/Outreach Coordinator

The HIV Intervention/Outreach Coordinator is responsible for facilitating pre/post test HIV counseling to ensure that clients understand their risk factors. Conducts health education activities that reduce the prevalence of HIV and disseminates information regarding HIV related services to specific target populations in the community.

Requirements:

• Basic knowledge and understanding of HIV, community resources.
• Must be culturally sensitive to HIV cultural factors.
• Must be able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and make decisions on a daily basis.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Public Health, Human Services or Nursing preferred. Associate’s Degree required.
• Must have a good driving record and possess a reliable, insured vehicle.
• HIV Counseling Certification required.

Hours:Full-time, Flexible and varied. Evenings and weekends may be required.

The Southeastern Michigan Health Association seeks to fill this position at the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Division of Health, Wellness and Disease Control

Licensed Registered Nurse desired; Knowledge in the field of public health and HIV/AIDS prevention; Minimum of 5 years program administration experience recommended; Experience in working in the field of corrections recommended; Experience in the design, implementation of statewide collaborative initiatives; Ability to lead and work with diverse individuals and groups in a culturally and linguistically competent manner; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Computer skills in microsoft word, and access.

Employee in this position will work with the MDCH to: Serve as the primary communication and facilitation link between Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and MDCH to address HIV-infected prisoner needs and access to support services once released.Coordinate the HIV/AIDS Partner Services Program and the Peer Education Program within two Michigan prison reception centers. Counsel HIV/AIDS infected prisoners for the purpose of eliciting information about at-risk partners, who are in need of partner services delivery by local public health departments. Consult with MDOC medical staff to assist in the interpretation of diagnostic test results relevant to HIV/STDs. Consult with MDOC medical staff to advocate for prisoner medical and psychosocial needs relative to HIV diagnosis. Coordinate and monitor the peer education counselor program for content accuracy and adherence to MDOC policies. Conduct training or trainers to peer educators to deliver HIV/STD prevention information to fellow prisoners. Assess the need and coordinate efforts to expand HIV/STD prevention messages and educational programs to other correctional facilities such as camps and residential programs.

Coordinate, serve and or work with community advisory groups and existing agencies such as Michigan’s Prison Re-entry Program to address needs of discharging prisoners infected with HIV. Assist in the research and development of educational programs and materials to increase HIV/STD awareness and education among correctional officers and medical staff. Monitor the facilitation of Michigan’s court-ordered testing program in accordance with Michigan’s Compiled law 333.5129 of 1988. Coordinate activities to promote knowledge of partner services in the local county jails, court systems and area probation programs. Support initiatives undertaken through Michigan’s Partner Services program to enhance services to local public health and other funded programs.

Psychology Junior Faculty Position - tenure track assistant professor position

The Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position that explores the psychosocial, contextual and behavioral factors associated with sexual health.  We are open with respect to particular area of expertise, but examples include: gender, cultural, or racial/ethnic factors that may affect risk-taking or other behaviors that lead to, or impact prevention, treatment, and progression of STDs/HIV;  personality, family, life stage or social network factors associated with sexual risk or decision-making; coping styles, personality and contextual predictors of coping strategies for STDs/HIV; psychosocial consequences of STDs/HIV for the individual, family, and community. We are particularly interested in individuals who are attracted to working within a multi-disciplinary environment. The department has strengths in the study of sexuality, gender, race/ethnicity, and social and developmental psychology that will provide a supportive environment for the new hire.

This position is part of a cluster of hires that will bring together faculty from Psychology, Women's Studies, Anthropology, Nursing and Obstetrics/Gynecology with an interest in psychosocial, behavioral and biomedical aspects of sexual health with an overarching focus on STDs/HIV/AIDS and women's health in diverse populations. Qualifications for this junior faculty position include: completion of PhD degree in a relevant field (Psychology is not required) and demonstrated appropriate research expertise.

This is a university-year appointment, with an expected start date of September 1, 2011.  Successful candidates will be expected to establish an independent research program and have a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. As a recognized expert and authority in the field of sexually transmitted diseases, the incumbent serves as the principal medical/scientific resource for the CDC in all public health aspects of STD and a member of the Center's senior leadership team, coordinating and providing leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a national policy for prevention of STDs. The incumbent also is responsible for managing DSTDP’s programmatic activities, providing scientific leadership in the development and implementation of division policy, program plans, and research goals and objectives. Moreover, the incumbent oversees an annual budget of $160 million and directs a staff of approximately 250 field employees and 160 headquarters personnel directly through 30 subordinate supervisors who are responsible to the incumbent for carrying out a nationwide STD prevention program.

 MAC NEEDs VOLUNTEERS for our new annual event, Dining by Design which is sure to become the newest social event of the year!  We have numerous opportunities for you to be part of this exciting event. You must be at least 18.  We need volunteers to help set up the various events; we also need volunteers for  registration, auction monitors, guest assistance and guest tours over the five days for this event. HAPIS seeking Program Review Panel Members

MDCH/HAPIS-funded HIV prevention programs and health departments can use only educational items that have been approved by the peer review panel coordinated by HAPIS. The Program Review Panel is composed of staff and volunteers of HIV programs from across Michigan. In order to expedite the review of the hundreds of brochures, manuals, books and videos submitted, HAPIS is looking for ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS. The estimated time commitment is between two and eight hours per month.

There are several ways you can be involved:

  • Educational Brochure Review Group. You can participate in this review panel sub-group from any location in the state. Materials will be mailed to you for your review every month (2-5 hours per month).
  • Video Review Group. A special video review group will meet in a central location to screen videos. These meetings will likely be in southeast Michigan, but if we get enough volunteers in an out-state area we will come to your part of the state for a video review day (5-8 hours per month).
  • Curriculum and Book Review Group. These will be special review sessions to screen materials that cannot be duplicated and reviewed by mail. These meetings will likely be in southeast Michigan, but if we get enough volunteers in an out-state area we will come to your part of the state for a curriculum review day (5-8 hours per quarterly meeting).

"Indiana University Starts Ryan White Scholarship for AIDS Studies"

Indiana University-Bloomington announced the creation of a new scholarship honoring the Indiana teenager whose battle for acceptance made him a national symbol in the fight against HIV- and AIDS-related stigma. The Ryan White Legacy Scholarship will be awarded by IU’s Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and its School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; its recipients will be students pursuing a master of public health degree, with preference to those studying AIDS/STD prevention or sexual health.
