World AIDS Day – December 1, 2007
A message from Debra L. Szwejda

Acting Director, Division of Health, Wellness and Disease Control

This year we mark the 26th anniversary since HIV was first recognized in 1981, and the world became engaged in the war against AIDS. We realize this war is not over as we continue in our individual and collective struggles to prevent the spread of this devastating disease. December 1st – World AIDS Day – is once again a time to reflect on where we are in the fight, and to envision where we hope to be in the future.

The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is again “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise,” with the emphasis on leadership and ensuring that governments and policymakers continue committing resources to fighting the AIDS epidemic. It also invokes a continuing commitment on a personal level for each of us to do our part, both individually, and as citizens of the world community, to continue to advocate for resources necessary to address this epidemic. Additional information about this worldwide event can be obtained from the World AIDS Campaign web site: http://worldaidscampaign.org .

As AIDS service providers, we have a responsibility to do our part in living up to the commitments we have made in order to prevent further infection and improve care. I invite you to join us and other concerned citizens around the world in observing World AIDS Day by sponsoring events at your agency or in your local community. The Division of Health, Wellness and Disease Control (DHWDC) will be sponsoring an event in Detroit, which will feature displays from Detroit area HIV/AIDS organizations, confidential and anonymous HIV testing, live entertainment, and remarks from local and statewide dignitaries. DHWDC has also developed the attached brochure that can be reproduced and used in your World AIDS Day activities.

In addition, DHWDC will be issuing a press release that will highlight various World AIDS Day activities throughout the state. In order to have your proposed event information listed, please fax the attached “Plan of Action” form by November 16, 2007, to the attention of Belinda Chandler at (517) 241-5911.

Also, to assist our community partners with World AIDS Day activities, attached is an order form for requesting materials. DHWDC will make every effort to send your complete order; however, availability of resources may limit the quantity supplied. All agencies requesting resources must also submit a plan of action.

Thank you again for all that you have done and will continue you do in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Your support has been invaluable in our goals to provide exemplary care and prevention services throughout the state.
