NTD Kick-off Rally

The annual National Test Day for HIV (NTD) Kick-off Rally has been scheduled for Friday March 19, 2010. The rally will be held in Okemos at the Hampton Inn, and strives to give Michigan agencies and local health departments a chance to plan for events to commemorate NTD on June 27th of each year. The rally also showcases projects conducted through NTD Mini Grants and is an excellent opportunity to learn tips on the kinds of events that can be applied for using these funds. This program is only open to agencies in Michigan that provide HIV testing and/or prevention services, and is a great opportunity for agencies to collaborate with one another. Please contact Lisa Taton-Murphy at HAPIS for further information or to register at 517-241-5932 or TatonL@michigan.gov .

Testing the Limits: Rapid HIV Testing in Detroit's African American and Latino Communities

3:00 - 4:30 PM, 2239 Lane Hall
The U-M Institute for Research on Women and Gender presents:Rosemary Polanco
Although much of the recently news regarding HIV/AIDS in Detroit focuses on young African American males, Polanco is particularly interested in the experiences of African American and Latina women who themselves are at increased risk of HIV infection but who also often bear the burden of caring for family members afflicted by the disease. She will discuss her work examining the testing behaviors of Detroiters at risk of HIV infection and investigating the conditions that facilitate and hinder voluntary testing, treatment initiation, and treatment adherence in this population.
Polanco earned her PhD in the History of Culture at the University of Chicago. This talk is part of IRWG's Visiting Scholars series, and is free and open to the public.

Webinar on Replicating Evidence-Based Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs

Please join The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 1:30 – 2:30 EST for a webinar discussion about replicating evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will soon announce funding available for evidence-based programs that reduce teen pregnancy.  Through a competitive award process, this new teen pregnancy prevention initiative will provide $75 million for “replicating programs that have been proven effective through rigorous evaluation to reduce teenage pregnancy, behavioral risk factors underlying teenage pregnancy, or other associated risk factors.”  The initiative will also provide $25 million for innovative and promising programs and $10 million for program support, training, and technical assistance.

While we don’t know the specific criteria that HHS will set for programs to be eligible for this funding, on this call, National Campaign staff will provide general information on evidence-based programs, tips on how to successfully replicate such a program in your community, and resources that may help you as you consider whether to apply for funding.

The call will focus on the following questions:

  • What is an evidence-based program?
  • How do I choose an evidence-based program that is the right fit for my community?
  • What does it mean to replicate a program with fidelity, and how important is it?
  • What resources does The National Campaign have on evidence-based programs?

Register for the webinar here.

For more information on this federal grant opportunity, visit the Campaign's Federal Funding resource web portal.

17th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections

The annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) is one of the major conferences of the year for the HIV world. The conference aims to give scientists and doctors an opportunity to share their HIV research, so that the work they do in clinical practice and in laboratories can be turned into progress around the world.
Highlights from this year's conference may include new information on:
• Treatment as prevention
• Hepatitis and HIV co-infection in the developing world
• Heart disease and bone problems in people on long-term treatment
• HIV and the brain: should we worry about long-term effects?
• Cancers in people with HIV
• TB prevention and treatment

July 18-23 2010                     Vienna, Austria

XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010)

AIDS 2010 is organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS), in partnership with government, scientific and civil society partners in Austria and international partners from civil society and the United Nations. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the IAS is the world's leading independent association of HIV professionals.

Abstract submissions

The XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) welcomes the submission of abstracts for original contribution to the field in the following six programme tracks:

Track A: Basic Science
Track B: Clinical Sciences
Track C: Epidemiology and Prevention Sciences
Track D: Social and Behavioural Sciences
Track E: Economics, Operations Research, Care and Health Systems
Track F: Policy, Law, Human Rights and Political Science

Abstract submissions will be scored by an international panel of reviewers through a blind peer-review process and ultimately selected by members of the AIDS 2010 Scientific Programme and Track Committees.

Online submissions will be accepted until 10 February 2010.

Full information on the scope and objectives for each of the tracks is available on the AIDS 2010 website here.

Abstract mentor programme

The goal of the AIDS 2010 Abstract Mentor Programme is to provide an opportunity for young and/or less experienced abstract submitters to ask questions of more experienced abstract submitters.

At AIDS 2008, online mentoring was shown to increase motivation and submission of abstracts by early-career researchers and those from low- and middle-income countries. The conference secretariat will facilitate the programme and match mentors with submitters.

The mentor programme is completely independent of the abstract review and selection process of the conference. It is an opportunity that will strengthen the quality of abstracts submitted, thereby increasing the chances of submitters having an abstract accepted for presentation.

Full information regarding the Abstract Mentor Programme is available on the AIDS 2010 website here.

International AIDS Conference Returns to U.S. in 2012
The XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) will be held July 2012 in Washington, DC. As the custodian of the conference, the International AIDS Society (IAS) made the decision because the United States is repealing its HIV travel ban, effective January 4, 2010. The last time the conference was held in the United States was 1990 in San Francisco.
